The Chip Trade Came Apart. The Dow Won The Month. shorts [tsqBmvj24lj]

July 31, 2026 close. The Dow rose 276.97 points, or 0.53%, to 52,485.03 — its fourth straight winning month. The S&P 500 added 0.7% to 7,489.72 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1% to 25,373.85. Amazon jumped about 10% after earnings, while Apple slipped and bond yields pushed higher. The interesting part is the month, not the day. July was the month the most crowded position on the market came apart — a steep derating in semiconductors that at one point wiped trillions off chip stocks and dragged Korea's Kospi down roughly 17% in three sessions. And the Dow still finished green for the fourth month running. That is what an index average does. It is a weighted sum, and a weighted sum can stay calm while its components fight. The month didn't reward "AI" as a category — it rewarded the companies whose AI spending showed up as revenue and punished the ones where it showed up only as cost. The average hides that fight. It doesn't resolve it. One number, every market day.
