While there has been some encouraging progress, they still do not know what is causing her illness. In this video, I break down the latest information from Jackie’s veterinary team, including: 🦅 Jackie remains clinically stable but is still very sick. 🦅 Her packed cell volume (PCV) has improved to 17%, but normal levels are over 30%. 🦅 Blood work continues to show anemia and leukocytosis (an elevated white blood cell count), indicating inflammation, stress, or a possible infection. 🦅 Veterinarians have ruled out lead poisoning, zinc toxicosis, aspergillosis, rodenticide toxicity, and kidney disease. 🦅 Additional testing for rare heavy metal poisoning is underway, but results may take several weeks. 🦅 More chest radiographs and another CT scan are planned once her PCV improves further. 🦅 Her care team continues to treat symptoms, provide supportive care, and systematically rule out possible causes one by one. The veterinary team emphasized that the encounter which left Jackie grounded at Big Bear Lake did not cause her illness. They believe she had already been unwell for some time before she was found unable to fly. Since her rescue nearly two weeks ago, an incredible team of wildlife veterinarians, technicians, and specialists from across the country has been working around the clock to save her life. Jackie is currently one of 91 wildlife patients receiving care at the rehabilitation facility. Recovery is expected to take weeks, if not months. Every day presents new challenges—but also new opportunities to help Jackie heal. I also share the latest Big Bear nest update, where Sandy, Luna, and Shadow were seen visiting the nest on July 30.
