Cornyn: This doesnt need to be this hard [aFWUpZM5Q5i]

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said Thursday that the White House has been unwilling to meet his demand to permanently scrap a controversial $1.8 billion "anti-weaponization" fund, throwing Todd Blanche's nomination to be attorney general into limbo. "I thought we were pretty close to landing the plane last night, but this morning there's been some more complications," the Texas Republican, who recently lost his reelection bid to a Trump-backed challenger, told reporters. "I think if this were just between me and Todd Blanche, we would have worked this out." The fund, which was widely panned on Capitol Hill, was part of the Justice Department-brokered settlement President Trump reached with the IRS earlier this year over the leaking of his tax returns during his first administration. Sens. John Cornyn and Thom Tillis (R-NC), who opted not to seek reelection, have both said they will not support Mr. Blanche until they have assurances in writing that the settlement will be reworked to permanently scrap the fund and limit the president's IRS audit immunity deal. Shortly after Sen. Cornyn's comments, President Trump said he would consider withdrawing Mr. Blanche's nomination and keep him in an acting role until the senators are out of office in January. Sen. Cornyn quickly shot back on social media, saying he and Sen. Tillis were not the only Republican senators opposed to the fund. The Judiciary Committee was set to vote on Mr. Blanche's nomination on Thursday, but the standoff forced the panel's chair, Chuck Grassley (R-IA), to postpone the meeting. A resolution must be reached soon if there's any hope of getting Mr. Blanche confirmed before senators leave town next week for their summer recess. "If this were just between me and Todd Blanche, we would've worked this out. But apparently, he's getting some pushback from higherups at the White House. I don't know who, but this doesn't need to be this hard," Sen. Cornyn said. #cspan #johncornyn #toddblanche #whitehouse #news
