Chambers County, Texas, the morning of September 16, 1988. On the second day of Hurricane Gilbert the most intense Atlantic hurricane on record at that point a 1979 International Harvester Blue Bird Type C school bus from the Winnie-Stowell Independent ramon ayala School District, on a routine Friday-morning church-organised field trip returning from the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, is caught by a two-and-a-half-foot storm surge four miles east of the small Double Bayou bridge on FM 1985 and stops dead on cordgrass mat with 47 civilian passengers aboard thirty-three elementary and middle-school children, the driver, and thirteen adult volunteer chaperones from Winnie First Methodist Church. The Chambers County Sheriff's Emergency Management Division sends two V-hull shallow-water rescue boats in from Anahuac. Both are grounded on cordgrass inside three hours. Texas DPS sends a hurricane-response field lieutenant in from Beaumont. The regional Salvation Army coordinator drives in from Galveston. By 9:14 a.m. the Chambers County Sheriff's field captain has signed a formal Field Operations Report reading, in plain language: "consist unreachable until surge recedes." The children are alive but Gilbert's outer bands are forecast to continue another twenty-eight hours, the bus's diesel engine has stalled at eighteen inches of aisle water, the youngest passenger is a nine-year-old asthmatic boy, and the surge is still rising.

Then a 71-year-old Cajun-descended Chambers County rancher named Beauregard "Beau" Thibodeaux, who lives on a low live-oak-and-hackberry rise a half-mile south of the trailhead command post, who came home to the family Thibodeaux marsh place after twelve years running Louisiana alligator lines in Vermilion Parish, and who has been the unpaid volunteer Chambers County Fire and Marine Rescue marsh-navigation reference since 1961 walks up to the command post in his elijah just Filson oilskin cruiser coat and tells the field captain, in his quiet Chambers County Cajun English, that he believes he can take his 1937 Twin City FTA the two and a half miles across the marsh, reach the school bus, hook it to the drawbar, and walk the entire consist back to the trailhead inside of five hours, weather holding worse than it currently is.
