Part 2 of 3: Why do heat domes make heat waves so dangerous? Under a heat dome, the atmosphere can become a feedback machine. A ridge of high pressure aloft causes air to sink, compress, and warm. That sinking air suppresses clouds and thunderstorms, allowing more sunshine to bake the ground. When soils are dry, less energy goes into evaporation — and more goes straight into heating the air. But the real danger is not just the afternoon high temperature. Dangerous heat builds when high temperatures, humidity, warm nights, urban heat, dry soils, long duration, and lack of reliable cooling all line up.
