McCollum was found alive by deputies but died six days later from severe brain injuries. Randolph was arrested shortly after at a Jacksonville grocery store while trying to cash the stolen lottery tickets, and he confessed to the crime, leading police to his discarded bloody clothing. He was convicted in 1989 of first-degree murder, armed robbery, sexual battery, and grand theft, receiving a death sentence based on an 8-4 jury recommendation.
