EP is designed for young people to experiment with sonic mediation, to practice communal listening to curated archives of sound and art, and to make creative work grounded in mindful listening. It is mostly a space for us to just BE; to take in beauty and mystery together, and see how we come out on the other side. We listen to music together, and breathe together. We design mantras, listen to and discuss artist interviews, and identify patterns across forms and genres. Participants explore media, and themselves, together. We can talk about Betye Saar, Herbie Hancock, DOOM, and the current pervasive struggles of our world, all in one session. Everything’s a portal that leads us to the next place… (This special Beat Routes course designed by Nicole Misha took place online during the pandemic 2021. The video series features edited highlights from a course that lasted 30 weeks) Biography: Nicole Misha (she/they) is a multimedia artist, producer, educator, and DJ born and currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Her study is informed by a combination of Black Feminist theory and praxis, an indulgence in what Octavia Butler calls "Positive Obsession," as well as Deep Listening, a practice cultivated by composer Pauline Oliveros that describes “an aesthetic based upon principles of improvisation...music, ritual, teaching and meditation.” Nicole believes that the transportive, transformative, and joy-inducing powers of sound and vibration can always be accessed through presence, mindfulness, and imagination. She's excited to see you on a dancefloor in the future.
