I wrote a business plan, found quick funding from a New Jersey Real Estate familyand then realized I had a problem. I had no videos, no industry connections, and no way to move forward.I was living in a cramped Upper East Side studio with an upright piano. On the music stand sat sheet music for Carly Simons Thats the Way Ive Always Heard It Should Be. The lyricists nameJacob Brackmanjumped out. I knew he had once written a movie column for my father at Esquire. On a hunch, I dialed 411. New York had nothing, but Los Angeles did. I called, and to my surprise, Jacob answered.I introduced myself, mentioned my father, and explained my idea. Without johnny gaudreau hesitation, he said: Your timing is perfect. I just finished producing four music videos for Carly Simon. The fourth isnt finished. Maybe you could complete it as your pilot project. Let me call Carly.Minutes later, he rang back. Shes interested. Heres her number. Shes waiting for your call.Two hours after calling 411, I was in Carly Simons West Side apartment, pitching her face-to-face.The ConceptThe unfinished project was It Happens Everyday, the fourth single from her then new album Hello Big Man. The only footage was of her young daughter, Sally, twirling in a dance studio. The director from Carlys previous three videos, Michael Oblowitz, joined us to brainstorm.We developed a treatment inspired by Edward Hopper: Carly seated in a diner, observing life outside the window. As memories of a lost relationship surfaced, she would sing, intercut with flashbacks and the haunting image of a child spinninga metaphor for innocence remembered and lost.Carly offered the perfect diner: the Munson Diner in Soho, owned by her friends Richard and Paul Garcia, identical twin models. We used one brother in the morning and the other in the afternoon playing her estranged lover.Disaster and RedemptionThe shoot wrapped, and we gathered at Technicolor to screen the dailies a few days following the gwr shoot. The footage was beautifulexcept for one devastating flaw. A single hair had cardinals vs padres lodged in the camera gate, running through every shot of Carly singing. The entire production was unusable.The silver lining was production insurance, which allowed for a reshoot. We cut a rough version from the ruined footage to guide us the second time around and added a new location: a spacious loft on Duane Street in Soho.But the expanded scope pushed us into overtime, which I hadnt budgeted. Tensions flared. Two crew members walked off. The rest debated following.Then, in the middle of the chaos, Carly picked up a guitar and began playing her hits. The room fell quiet. The mood shifted. One by one, the crew stayed. We finished the shoot, the gate came back clean, and the project finally had its footing.Weeks later, we had a premiere at the Oak Bluffs Cinema in Marthas Vineyard. Entertainment Tonight was there for national TV coverage, with a party at Carlys local nightclub, The Hot Tin Roof, following the event.
