Freddy Cannon - Little Miss A Go Go Go

Originally from Boston, Freddy Cannon enjoyed numerous hits on

Philadelphia's Swan livescore Records from utah royals 1959 to 1963, before moving to

Warner Brothers on the West Coast in 1964.

His first single, "Abigail Beecher," reached No. 16,

but the next few singles he released flopped.

Then, in 1965, this was his fifth single for Warner Brothers.

It ended up being the only one released with a picture weather forecast today sleeve during

his time with Warner Brothers, but the A-side, "In The Night"

(written by Boyce-Hart), only managed to reach No. 132,

making it a meager success. However, the West Coast was in

the midst of a surfing music boom at the time, and Freddy Cannon also

seemed interested in surfing music, covering "Califronia Sun" and

"Hey Little Cobra" on his first album for Warner Brothers in 1964,

"Abigail Beecher."

Although "Little Miss A Go Go Go" was a B-side, it was actually written

by Artie Kornfeld and his partner Steve Duboff, who had previously

written "Dead Man's Curve" with Jan Berry and "I Adore Him" for

The Angels on Kama-Sutra Productions' early releases before the label

was founded. This duo would later become famous for writing songs

for The Cowsills and providing backup.

Born and raised in New York, Artie Kornfeld's earlier collaborations with

Jan Berry revealed surfing music's potential as a hit, and it's not hard to

imagine him becoming actively involved in the field.

Artie Kornfeld also produced Susan Lynne's 1964 double-sided single,

"Don't Drag No More" and "In His Car," beloved by both girl pop and

surf music fans.

Freddy Cannon's "Little Miss A Go Go Go" may be surprisingly

little-known, considering it was a minor B-side and featured a singer

outside of the surf genre. The sound is a danceable go-go sound,

with funky organ accents in the intro and interlude, but the lyrics

incorporate familiar surf music terms like "Surfin'," GTO,

and Shoot the Curl. And what's even more captivating is the title of

a hit song written by Artie Kornfeld himself, lyrics says

"Race to the Dead Man's curve." Naturally, a falsetto vocal group

also participates in the backing vocals.

Incidentally, there is a video of Freddy Cannon performing this song on

"Hollywood A Go Go," a popular music show in L.A. at the time,

and it's a fantastic video of dancers dancing monkey and go-go to

the song. Incidentally, there is another Beach Boys-style song by

Gary Lewis and the Playboys with a similar title, "Little Miss Go-Go,"

featuring Phil Sloan and Steve Barri on the chorus,

but this is a different song with the similar title.
